The Upside of Being Bored

Why is it that whenever we feel bored or sleepy, it’s always at the worst timing? We’re trying to work, but we’re yawning. And then, when we want to relax, we feel restless. It’s annoying! We try to change how we feel, but we can’t. But, what if there’s an advantage to feeling this way?

Consider:

  • Instead of fighting the feeling and trying to force yourself to be lively and engaged, accept it for what it is and consider what also is true:

    • Are you bored? OK, what else is true? There are no worries on your mind. No stress. There’s no tension. Isn’t that a good thing?
    • Are you sleepy? OK, what else? I am tired, I could sleep, but I’m also calm. Good! Again, there’s no tension. No worries. No stress. Isn’t that a good thing?
    • Reframe your thinking from “I am bored” to “I am relaxed and at ease.” See if you don’t get just a small boost of motivation to continue on with what is before you.

  • Work doesn’t always need high energy and stimulation to be effective. Discover what quality of work can result when you approach it with an alternate level of energy: relaxed, at ease, and stress-free.

  • This is your opportunity to rest while you can. To appreciate being relaxed with no worries on your mind. Moments like this don’t last forever. Enjoy it while it lasts!
