When You Have Multiple Things to do at Once

When you have several different things to do, it can feel overwhelming. You may be tempted to rush to get everything done in time.

Consider:

  • Remember: rushing only leads to more stress, mistakes, and poor outcomes.

  • Instead of trying to do 3 things at once, or squeezing all these tasks on your to-do list for today, pick one thing and do it really well.

  • Delegate the other things to another time, person, or place. You will feel like you don’t have a choice in the matter: “but I have to do X, Y and Z”–but do you, really? Is it essential to complete all those things right now? Ask yourself:
    • Do I have to be the person to complete this task?
    • Am I the only person capable and responsible for this? Could someone else do it instead?
    • Do Y and Z have to be done today? Right now?

  • Narrow down what is most essential and focus on doing this one thing well.
    • Some things may not get done today. That’s OK.
    • Put the blinders on, and do what you need to get what is most important done.
