Show up, Anyway

Tired as I may be, I move anyway. And it’s with a little effort, but not with force; it’s with intention, but not exertion. It’s just simple, steady action. And mostly, the only reason why I show up is to remind myself, demonstrate to myself, that all action, even if it’s not my best, is worthwhile.

All action is profitable:

  • When you act purposefully, deliberately, even when you don’t feel like it, you affirm your commitment to yourself and your endeavour that you do what you set out to do, especially when you don’t feel like it.

  • It doesn’t matter if it’s not your best—you know it won’t always be your best—but acting anyway ensures that next time it will be better. This one act feels rough and laborious to perform–OK, that just means that next time, or the next, it will be easier.

  • Not every day is easy, not every effort feels effortless, and that’s not a bad thing. Days like these are like a gift for your future self: evidence to remind you that it doesn’t matter if it feels harder than usual or it’s not your best, you maintain your commitment and you gain sovereignty of self.
