How many times a day do we experience that feeling of wanting something for pleasure or comfort? It seems we’re constantly at our own beck and call to fulfill our desires.

Consider:

  • Practice normalizing the state of want. Wanting something without having it.

  • Think of addressing your wants like a parent: “I know you want that… you can have it tomorrow.” Say you want to do X, Y, and Z: tell yourself you can choose one and save the rest for tomorrow. Spread it out.

  • Practice throughout the day to accustom yourself to feeling want for something, but not fulfilling it. It’s not about deprivation. It’s about normalizing the experience of those little wants, so you save time, energy, and money for the things you really want.
