Rest Effectively

Sometimes you’re tired, and you don’t even realize you’re tired. You want to stay up, watch something, or have too much to do. You keep going and going, relying on the caffeine and distractions to get by.


  • Notice what your body is telling you. Notice those very subtle signs of fatigue that you might otherwise overlook:
    • Slight underlying irritability, decreased ability to focus, wanting to snack on sweet or stimulating food, this almost defensiveness when you consider that you probably should sleep–I can’t, I don’t want to, I need to do X, Y, Z.

  • Think of yourself as a small child. What would be best? What do you need most this moment? What would most effectively give you rest?

  • Sometimes you have to just put yourself to bed as you would a small child. Even if you don’t feel like doing it, you know, deep down, what you need. Give yourself a 10-15 min nap, go to bed early. Put yourself to bed and provide yourself the rest you need, knowing you’ll wake up tomorrow refreshed, ready, and able to bring your best to the demands before you.
