Tame Craving Without Willpower

It’s hard to resist something you crave but don’t really want. When you know it’s not in your best interest and you want it for the wrong reasons, or when you feel that sense of urgency to indulge right now. At this moment, it can feel like your only option is to resist. To tense up and fight the urge to give in. Consider another way—a more effective way—to handle it:

Try this:

  • Determine how much you’re willing to “spend” on this thing. OK, you want that thing. For how much? What is it really worth to you right now?

  • Everything has a cost: money, the undesired after-effects of consumption, inconvenience, etc. Consider the costs in terms of consequences: how will it make you feel later, tomorrow, in 2 weeks? Do you still really want this thing for that price? Is it still worth it?

  • Consider the amount of satisfaction it will provide not just now but later, as well. Aim to maximize fulfillment. If it doesn’t provide maximum fulfillment, then save it for another time. Look ahead to a later time to enjoy it. Another opportunity down the road. Look forward to a future time when you can get the most out of your experience and thoroughly enjoy it most.
