Notice the experience of excitement. Notice when you have that subtle and sudden increase in energy–the feeling of elation that arises when you talk about something or with someone you like or think about some upcoming event. Notice your thoughts moving faster, speaking faster. You are filled with energy, and it feels good! Take notice of this and pause for a moment.

Consider:

  • Anxiety and excitement are the same: just heightened energy. Both take you out of the present. Both allow your feelings to be in control.

  • When feelings are in control, we are subject to be swayed by any change in emotion or circumstance around us. With excitement, especially, we are more susceptible–it feels so good, so we let our guard down! Excitement can easily become anxiety when you allow yourself to get caught up in feeling good. When you’re distracted by feelings, you’re distracted from the present, and your feelings are in control.

  • Try this:
    • When you sense that sudden rise in emotion and elation, pause.
    • Slow your thoughts down. Slow your words down. Slow your actions down.
    • Relax that strange, subtle tension in your body. Breathe.
    • Move consciously, aware of each thought, action and sensation. This way, you ensure your happiness. Circumstances won’t affect you. Any sudden change in emotion can’t sway you. You can feel good longer because you’re grounded in the present, and when you’re grounded in the present, your happiness is in your control.
