Use Craving as Your Cue

When you find yourself having one of those days where you feel incessantly craving stimulation or comfort–something to make you feel good–think of this as a signal.

Consider:

  • This is your sign that you need to pause and take a moment for yourself.

  • Find a quiet place to take a few minutes to yourself–even if the only private place you can find is the bathroom! Take a few deep breaths and settle your thoughts. Identify what it is that you really need:
    • Maybe it’s rest: consider taking a nap or lowering the demands on yourself today.
    • Maybe it’s mental rest: consider scheduling a day to do so.
    • Find something that will meet that need at its core.

  • Whatever you feel, no matter how strong or pressing the feelings, the answer is not in the things you crave. The caffeine, the sugar–whatever it is you want–will not solve the problem; it’s just the first thing that comes to mind. Retreat into yourself and find out what you really need, then make a plan to provide yourself with what will deeply satisfy that need.
