When You’re Having a Tough Week

Do you ever have weeks that are harder than usual? You feel off; you feel low. Everything feels hard, and you don’t feel like yourself. You feel stuck and can’t seem to get out of this low-mind state.

Consider:

  • Pay attention to the language you use when talking to yourself. What things are you telling yourself? See if you can notice any perpetuating thoughts:
    • “I don’t know…”
    • “I can’t do this…”
    • “I’m so tired…”

  • Even if it’s true that you are tired, recognize how repeatedly telling yourself this is not helping. See if you can replace those thoughts with other statements that affirm an alternative perspective:
    • What other things are true of this situation?
    • What else are you doing or can you do?
    • Yes, you’re tired, and this task may not be doable as you planned, but what can you do?

  • Thoughts are not benign. What we repeatedly think can encourage us or keep us down. Next time you feel this way, consider how you’ve been talking to yourself. Sometimes the simplest shift of language is all we need to get ourselves out of that mental state and back to feeling hopeful again.
